Painted in May 1890 during the final weeks of Van Gogh's life at Auvers-sur-Oise, this swirling field was one of over seventy canvases he completed in his seventy days there — nearly one painting per day. With no figure and no story, it rests entirely on the wind-stirred land. He died two months later, shot in a field almost identical to this one.
