The story behind Wanderer above the Sea of Fog
Around 1818, Friedrich placed a lone figure on a rocky summit — back to the viewer, face unseen — staring out over a rolling sea of cloud. This device, which he used throughout his career, was meant to pull the viewer into the painting, looking with the figure rather than at them. The landscape is not a real place: Friedrich assembled it from sketches he made across Germany and the Czech mountains.
