In 1893, Monet bought a plot of marshy land next to his home at Giverny and spent years engineering a pond, diverting a local stream — over the protests of neighbors who feared his exotic plants would poison the water. The authorities eventually required him to hire a dedicated gardener whose only task was to clean the lily pads each morning before he could paint. What began as a fight over a drainage ditch became the subject of his greatest series.
