In 1916, Frederick Childe Hassam watched a Preparedness Day parade pass beneath his New York studio window — a river of flags rippling in the rain — and began painting the scene obsessively. Over two years he produced around thirty flag paintings, using patriotism and wet city light as a deliberate artistic campaign to build American public support for entering the war. It now hangs in the White House.
